Little Island Creamery is a charming little dairy producing fresh cow and goat milk, cow butter, and artisan cheese made with a blend of cow and goat milk.
Little Island Creamery was the brainchild of Dick McDonald, or “Farmer Dick”, and Kyleen Austin. A Washington native, Dick was an economist in Chicago and Washington DC before retiring to the life in the country. Kyleen is a recording and performing artist. Her music has gained a great deal of momentum in the past several years and she is on stage and performing regularly. Kyleen is also a kayak guide and, every year between April and October, she leads kayak tours with Columbia River Kayaking in Skamokawa. She has been a cheese maker for 15 years, during which she has designed and started two other licensed dairies. In 2014, Dick asked Kyleen to help him restore the barn, bringing it back to life as a licensed dairy operation. Kyleen had previously only worked with goats and Dick wanted fresh cow butter, so they decided to offer the best of both worlds. Combining Dick’s newly-acquired knowledge of cattle, Kyleen’s longer-term experience with goats, and a little support and guidance from local friends and neighbors, the road to starting and growing our healthy herd of cows and goats while creating unique and flavorful products has been smooth and successful. We are grateful for our family of talented and dedicated dairy technicians, farmhands and administrative support.
